MTN Group CEO/President visits Ghana

Accra 27th January 2022. MTN Group CEO and President Ralph Mupita has paid a day’s working visit to Ghana to engage some key stakeholders of the business and reiterate MTN’s commitment to help grow the telecommunications industry in Ghana.

The Group CEO and his team of executives paid courtesy calls on the Bank of Ghana, Ghana Revenue Authority, Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Communications and Digitalization to interact and discuss issues of mutual interest.

During the visit to the Bank of Ghana Mr. Mupita expressed his appreciation to the Central Bank for the support given to the business over the years. In his remarks the Governor of The Bank Dr. Ernest Addison congratulated MTN for the work done in the mobile financial services sector and indicated the BOG will count on the business to champion innovation and Financial Inclusion. Dr Addison was joined by the 2nd Deputy Governor Mrs Elsie Addo Awadzi.

Ralph Mupita and his delegation then called on the Commissioner General of the Ghana Revenue Authority Rev. Amishaddai Owusu-Amoah and his deputies where he commended Ghana for encouraging headline growth last year.  

 In his engagements with the Ministry for Finance and the Ministry of Communications and digitalization, Ralph reiterated MTN Group’s commitment to the Ghana market and the company’s continuous support to the Government of Ghana in achieving its digital agenda.

 This is the third visit of the Group CEO to Ghana since he assumed office.  The Group CEO is being accompanied by the Vice President for WECA Ebenezer Asante, CEO of MTN Ghana Selorm Adadevoh, CEO of Mobile Money Ltd Eli Hini, Chief Corporate Services Officer Sam Koranteng and Chief Finance Officer Antoinette Kwofie.

The visit to Ghana is part of Ralph’s commitment to growing MTN’s business in the various markets by consistently engaging local authorities to understand their expectations and to foster cordial working relationship. Ralph’s next stop is Nigeria where he will also engage key stakeholders.

MTN Ghana discusses the media and the law in MTN virtual “Bright Series”

Accra June 10 2020. Renowned Lawyer and lecturer, Ernest Kofi Abotsi shared valuable insights with a select number of media persons who participated in MTN Ghana’s Bright Story Series organized to empower participants in the area of development communication and journalism. 

Addressing participants at the virtual forum on the theme “The Media And The Law’, Lawyer Abotsi took participants through several topics regarding the legal and regulatory framework of media practice in Ghana which included the 1992 Constitution, The Whistle Blower Act, Censorship Laws And Abolishment, The Right To Information Law, Electronic Communications Act and a host of many others.  

He also touched on the legal framework governing online and social media space.

Lawyer Kofi Abotsi also spent a lot of time explaining how the relevant portions of the law that guarantees Media freedom and media rights as well as the freedom of expression.  Commenting on the laws governing the digital world, he explained “when you publish a content that is defamatory on the internet the laws on defamation apply. The twist to it is that any other persons who circulating the publication can be sued for defamation. He therefore advised all media consumers to be cautious in forwarding information without verifying it. 

Nana Kwasi Gyan Apenteng, the immediate past chairman of the National Media Commission who was a guest at the forum made contributions to bring clarity to the roles of the Commission and the laws that govern its operations.

Mr. Sam Koranteng, Corporate Services Executive, MTN Ghana, who is also a Lawyer said that the idea behind the engagement with media professionals was to impart the requisite skills needed to aid the practice of journalism in these modern times.  He indicated that MTN will continue to invest in seminars aimed at enhancing the professional capabilities of the media.

“This year’s BRIGHT series had a focus on the law in journalism practice because we realized over the years it is an area that most journalists need a refresher course in. We also considered it as our contribution to ensuring that we have a well informed and formidable media sector in Ghana”, Georgina Asare Fiagbenu, Senior Manager for Corporate Communication at MTN Ghana said. 

The Bright Story Series is an initiative by MTN Ghana aimed at resourcing practicing journalists with additional and requisite knowledge that will facilitate the practice of sound journalism in Ghana. The workshop, which began in 2017 has trained over 300 journalists across the country.

MTN and Samsung present 500 phones to the government of Ghana to support contact tracing activities

Accra, 1st July 2020. MTN Ghana has partnered Samsung Ghana to present 500 Samsung Galaxy A2 Core Smartphones to support Government and the Ghana Health Services as they lead the fight against COVID -19 through enhanced Contact Tracing.

The phones come with 500 MTN sim cards and a total of 3,000GB data.  Each of the phones will be loaded with 500MB data every month for a period of 6 months.  

The presentation was made by the representatives of Samsung Electronics West Africa and MTN Ghana.  The Minister for Information, Honorable Kojo Oppong Nkrumah (MP) and the Chief Director of the Ministry,  Mrs. Mamle Andrews received the items at the premises of the Ministry Of Information after a brief ceremony organized to hand over the devices.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Samsung Electronics West Africa, Ghana, Eugene Nahm said, “As COVID-19 continues to make its way across the country, our thoughts are with the people of Ghana. We are therefore happy to provide these resources to support government and health officials in the fight against this global pandemic. We believe that all companies should unite to work together with the country’s leaders and corporates now more than ever”.

In her address, the Senior Manager-Consumer Marketing at MTN Nana Asantewaa Amegashie expressed her excitement about the opportunity. She said, “The partnership with Samsung has presented another opportunity to MTN to commit more resources to the fight against COVID-19. This presentation of the data package and the Sim cards is an addition to free online access to over 200 educational websites to support online studies. It also adds to MTN Foundation’s commitment to provide 5 million Cedis worth of medical supplies to support government’s efforts at fighting the disease”. 

The Minister for Information expressed his appreciation to Samsung and MTN Ghana for the very noble gesture that will help in the fight against COVID-19.

Again, the presentation to the Ministry Of Information also follows a presentation made to the Noguchi Memorial Institute a few weeks ago to support the Institute to meet the growing demand in records taking, storage and management of essential COVID- 19 data. The presentation to Noguchi comprised of One Dell Server, five HP laptops and accessories, five headsets, a Black and White Printer, a Color Printer and two all-in-one Lenovo desktop computer.
