MTN launches Global FIFA 2010 World Cup Activation Plan

Accra May 29, 2008 - MTN, sponsor of the FIFA 2010 World Cup to be staged in South Africa, today formally launched its global FIFA 2010 World Cup Activation Plan at a brief ceremony at Alisa Hotel, Accra.

The ceremony was held in all the company’s 21 operations in Africa and the Middle East.  In Ghana the launch was done in Kumasi and Accra. The highlight of the ceremony was the launch of the MTN FIFA campaign theme ONE SPIRIT, ONE GAME.

MTN announced plans to unveil soon a number of football-related initiatives aimed at rewarding all its stakeholders including employees, customers and the general public.

In his address at the Ghana event, the C.E.O of MTN-Ghana, Brett Goschen reinforced the company’s commitment to the FIFA 2010 World Cup. He remarked that MTN’s sponsorship of the tournament is proof of the company’s pride and belief in the African continent and what it is able to achieve..

He continued, “We at MTN are delighted that as a company that is traditionally rooted in Africa and positioned strategically to provide excellent services in emerging markets, we would win the rights to sponsor a game that Africans adore”.  He explained further that MTN is passionate about its markets and the beautiful game of football and the FIFA World Cup provided the golden opportunity to fulfill that passion.

The Chief Marketing Officer, George Andah, remarked, "MTN will package an unforgettable tournament for the enjoyment of the avid football fan". While pledging MTN’s support for the Black Stars, he also encouraged the Ghanaian public to do likewise to ensure the team’s qualification to the 2010 World Cup.

Commenting on the campaign concept, he explained “we are using a number of significant African items including the calabash which is traditionally used to

welcome guest into our homes, we are welcoming the world to Africa but even stronger is the recognition of the fact that we all share One Spirit and One Game. That spirit which makes us Create, Challenge and Serve is what we are seeking to reinforce.”

MTN is the sponsor of the FIFA 2010 World cup to be held in South Africa. It is the first-ever feat by an African company.
