MTN Apps Challenge to Create Opportunities for Local Developers

Ghana’s biggest telecommunications company, MTN, today revealed that its mobile apps competition launched for local apps developers has attracted massive interest from local application (apps) developers and software companies.

Shortly after the launch of the competition, MTN organized roadshows at several university campuses in Ghana to drive awareness of the competition. The roadshow targeted students from Ashesi University, University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast and the Kofi Annan Center for ICT.  The students heaped praises on MTN for the innovative idea that will bring local developers to the limelight and to award young and talented developers for their work.

The next few weeks of the competition would see participants submitting apps for the contest. Contestants are required to register for the contest via a web portal ( Entries are to be submitted electronically together with a short video of how each app works plus a presentation on the functionality and mode of installing the app.

A team of esteemed judges from industry and academia are lined up to assess and rate the submitted apps. Contestants will be invited to interact with the judges and to answer questions related to the applications submitted. This will help provide more information to the judges as they make their final decisions. The contest is expected to get keener, raising the bar several notches higher than the winning apps for last year’s Challenge.

An awards event which promises to bring together a number of technology experts will be held on the 10th December 2014 to announce the winner and to unveil the best apps submitted in this year’s contest.  Developers and software companies are encouraged to join the contest and receive tremendous publicity for their apps in addition to mouth-watering prizes. The overall winner will enjoy a full-expense paid trip to an international mobile conference.
