What is MTN Pay As You Go (Prepaid) Roaming?

It is a service that allows an MTN Pay As You Go (Prepaid) customer to make and receive calls, send and receive SMS on the same MTN Pay As You Go number while travelling outside Ghana in 123countries around the world.
Your MTN Pay As You Go SIM and Handset are all that you need to keep in touch with your family, friends and business associates while you are travelling outside Ghana.

Activation of the service

You need to be an MTN Pay As You Go Customer.
Activation of the service is done by default for all MTN Pay As You Go subscribers. There is no need to visit any of MTN Customer Care Centre to have the service activated.
 Note                                                                                                                                                The Pay As You Go customer would have one account, thus the local account (“Pay As You Go”) from which he/she can make and receive phone calls when in or outside Ghana.

How does it work?

When you arrive in the country of your destination, switch on your mobile handset. By default, your handset will automatically connect to an available GSM network. However, you may need to go to your handset menu and select a network manually in cases where:     
  • Several networks overlap
  •  Automatic selection fails.
  • Cannot make a call or got the message of “USSD failed”.

If you have problems,

  • Call our Pay As You Go(Prepaid)  Roaming call center on *111*00233244300000# OK or
  • Send an email to customercare@mtn.com.gh.

Recharging your Account

  • Buy a regular MTN Pay As You Go Recharge Card.
  • Scratch the designated area on the Recharge Card to reveal your serial  number.
  • On your handset key pad press the buttons: *125*.
    Enter the 13-digit number found under the scratch-off area on your recharge card, press the # button then (Yes or OK) and wait. Eg. *125*xxxxxxxxxxxxx#
  • A current status message will be displayed on your handset screen stating the status of your account.
  • A confirmation of your account balance will be sent by SMS as well.

In case the Recharge Card’s serial number is entered incorrectly 3 consecutive times, the recharge function would be automatically blocked.

Recharge Cards

  •  Various MTN Pay As You Go Recharge Card denominations are available. They range from GHS 20.00, GHS 15.00 GHS 7.50 and other lower denominational recharge cards.
  • You can buy your MTN Pay As You Go recharge card from any MTN Office, retail outlets or authorized distributor.
  • It is advisable that you keep additional recharge cards with you while travelling.
  • You can recharge your account before travelling or when you’ve arrived in the country of your destination.
  • Make sure that you always have enough credit on your account while travelling.
  • Recharge by credit card will be available soon.

Making a Call

When you reach the Country of your destination and you want to make a call:
Press on your handset key pad, the buttons: *111*.
Dial “00”, then the country code, followed by the telephone number, then press the button # followed by ( Yes ) or ( OK ). Your phone will ring back. Receive it as you would a normal incoming call by pressing the button (Yes) or (OK).
A voice message will inform you of your available balance and call time right before the connection is made.
Eg. *111*0023324(54)xxxxxxx# OK
You will be charged only when your phone call goes through and your Pay-As-You- Go talk balance will be debited accordingly.

Receiving a Call

When some one dials your MTN Pay-As-You- Go number you will receive a call. Receive the incoming call by pressing the button (Yes) or (OK).
You will be charged once you answer the phone call then your Pay As You Go account will be debited accordingly.

Sending an SMS

To send an SMS draft the SMS and send it using “+” and the country code followed by the contact numbep. Eg.  +23324(54)xxxxxxx

Checking your Account Balance

  • On your handset key pad press the buttons: *124# then press (Yes) or (OK) and wait.
  • The balance of your Pay As You Go Roaming Account will appear on your handset screen.
  • Even if you do not have any more credit, you can still perform the following actions:
      •  Check your account balance
      • Recharge your Account
      • Make emergency calls: Enter 112 then press (Yes) or (OK) button.

Checking the Call Tariff

If you want to check a tariff for an outgoing call:
  • Press *110* enter the number you want to call followed by # then press (Yes) or (OK) and wait.
  • A message will be displayed on your handset screen stating the price per minute for the outgoing call to this destination.
  • If you want to check a tariff for an incoming call:
    • Press *109 followed by # then press (Yes) or (OK) and wait.
    • A message will be displayed on your handset screen stating the price per minute for the incoming call.

Call Divert

To divert your calls to another telephone you need to:
  • Activate the divert option by pressing *130* then,
  • Enter the divert to destination telephone number, (Country Code then the number) followed by # then press (Yes) or (OK).

To deactivate Call Divert.
Press *131* followed by # then press (Yes) or (OK).
To check divert status ( to which number the divert is made)                                                Press *132 followed by # then press (Yes) or (OK)

2. Under what circumstances will my mobile not automatically connect to an available GSM network?
Ans:
 By default, your handset will automatically connect to an available GSM network.
However, you may need to select a network manually in cases where several networks overlap. If this happens select another network manually by going to the phone’s menu.

3. What happens if my call credit is Zero?
Ans:
Your number will be still active, but you cannot make or receive calls. In this case you can only  recharge your account.
