MTN Ghana Foundation supports flood victims with GHC 45,000.00


Accra, 8th August, 2011 – The MTN Ghana Foundation announced a GH¢45,000 relief package to the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) to support the flood victims in the Eastern and Volta Regions, following the recent heavy down pour that devastated many communities in these regions.
The relief items, were made up of food and non-food items. The food items comprised

Food Items

  • 100 bags of  Rice     (25kg)
  • 100 bags of  Maize (25kg)
  • 50 bags of Beans  (25kg)
  • 20 bags of sugar     (25kg)
  • 20 bags of salt        
  • 50 cartons of tin fish

Non Food Items

  • 100 cartons of bathing soap
  • 100 cartons of washing soap
  • 100 cartons of detergents
  • 300 student mattresses
  • 300 blankets
  • 300 polymers
  • 3,000 cups
  • 50 phones & GH¢1,000 worth of MTN airtime.

The Foundation is carrying out this activity in partnership with Joy FM under the “MTN-Joy FM Flood Victims Support Fund”. An MTN Mobile Money fund has been set up by MTN and Joy FM to encourage people to donate to help the flood victims. The fund will run for a month after which all the monies realized will be donated or used to purchase some more relief items.Anyone with the MTN Mobile Money service can support the fund by transferring money to the wallet number 0246300324 or visit any MTN office or Mobile Money merchant and pay into the fund.

Presenting the relief items to the National Coordinator of NADMO on behalf of Mrs. Mawuena Trebarh - Executive Director of the MTN Ghana Foundation, Mr. Robert Kuzoe, the Executive Secretary, commended NADMO for their speedy intervention when the incident was first announced.
As the Corporate Social Responsibility wing of MTN, he indicated that the Foundation is committed to partner with key state agencies and the media to bring relief to people in distress.
“It is for this reason that among others, we are also presenting 50 phones and GH¢1000 worth of air time to our brothers and sisters just to ensure that even in their time of grief they can still stay connected so their families and friends can reach them,” she said.
Mr. Kuzoe said the MTN Ghana Foundation shares in the grief of the victims particularly those who lost their relatives and assured them of MTN’s commiseration with them saying “our warmest thoughts go out to the families of those who lost their beloved ones to the floods,”
He also commended Joy FM for bringing the plight of the victims to the public’s attention and creating channels for individuals and corporate entities like MTN to support.
Receiving the items on behalf of the flood victims, the National Coordinator of NADMO, Mr. Kofi Portuphy, thanked MTN and Joy FM for their collaborative efforts in helping NADMO to provide relief for the victims. He also commended them for setting up the “MTN-Joy FM Flood Victims Support Fund” and urged all to contribute to the fund.
